Our courses are interactive and designed for adult learners, using restorative circles, discussion, reflection, and applied learning to support shared learning and healing. We use circles as a restorative practice and honor the experience and knowledge of each participant. Our staff are mentors, community leaders, researchers, advocates, and educators with specialized training in restorative practices, trauma-informed approaches, mental health and wellness, and policy research. Courses and workshops are offered at The New School and at partner sites.

The Institute for Transformative Mentoring's flagship program prepares credible messengers to become more effective mentors. Developed in partnership with nonprofit leaders, credible messengers, and higher education faculty, the program combines personal healing with practical skills that strengthen participants' impact in their organizations and communities.

The Self-Care & Empowerment Facilitator Training prepares young adults to better understand themselves and become peer mentors and facilitators. Through a combination of classroom learning, facilitator training, and a paid community internship, participants build the knowledge, confidence, and practical experience needed to support the healing and growth of their peers.

The ITM Public Policy Fellowship is a five-month leadership program for graduates of the Transformative Mentoring Course who are ready to become advocates for systems change. The fellowship equips credible messengers with the knowledge, skills, and experience to influence public policy, strengthen communities, and advance the movement for justice.

The Mentor’s Action Plan (MAP) is a year-long fellowship for credible messenger leaders to design and lead restorative justice initiatives that strengthen community safety, healing, and belonging. MAP is designed for credible messengers who are spearheading community-based work and the program combines intensive training, coaching, and project support to help participants put restorative justice into action.
Over the course of a year, fellows participate in five months of classroom learning and individualized coaching while developing and implementing a community-based restorative justice project. Each participating team may receive up to $5,000 to support its initiative and may also host interns from our young adult program.

The Institute for Transformative Mentoring offers customized trainings for nonprofit organizations, schools, government agencies, and community groups. Workshops are interactive, practice-based, and can be tailored to meet the needs of your staff, leaders, or community. Most workshops are offered in 2-hour sessions and may be expanded or combined into a multi-session series at your site or at The New School. There is a fee for these services with some need based exceptions.
