Improving public schools for every child in NYC

For over 20 years, we have been a trusted source of information and insight about New York City’s education system. Over a million users come to us every year for independent reviews of over 1,800 schools and use our guided search tools to better understand New York City public schools.

Today, InsideSchools serves as a vital resource for families throughout their children’s K-12 public school education by serving as the one-stop-shop where NYC families can find free expert advice, resources and community. Our website and vibrant online community, InsideSchools+, create places where families, schools, community groups, and others share information and resources.

Economic & Fiscal Policy

Economic research to improve livelihoods in NYC

The Covid-19 pandemic deepened New York City’s already-yawning social and economic chasms. Unemployment, poverty, homelessness, and hunger continue to plague shockingly large numbers of New Yorkers – especially in communities of color.

Our Covid Economic Recovery Project explores these critical problems – and identifies ways to address them. Our updates on the local labor market are an essential, go-to resource for journalists and policymakers. Our in-depth analysis of City and State budgets spells out what policymakers are – and aren’t – doing to ensure an economic recovery that’s fair to all New Yorkers. And our reports on a range of occupational sectors – from hotel and restaurant employees to nail salon workers – paint a picture of working life in today’s New York.

ITM

Institute of Transformative Mentoring

Mentoring Frontline Anti-Violence Workers

ITM works with Credible Messengers:  New Yorkers impacted by the criminal justice system who now use their lived experiences to stop violence, mentor young people, and strengthen their communities.

ITM guidance and skills-building help credible messengers advance professionally in the social services and become more effective organizers and advocates.

Children and Families

A Better Future for NYC Children's Services

For nearly twenty years, the Center’s Child Welfare Watch project has focused on vulnerable children, youth and families.
The Center tracks the economic and social wellbeing individuals and communities, examines the quality of public services, and offers constructive recommendations for reform. We are particularly interested in how poverty intersects with low-wage work, homelessness, child welfare, and the justice system.

The New Hood

Nothing for Us Without Us.

The New Hood is a new project that envisions a world in which urban Black and Latinx communities are thriving through policies they created. With community leaders and New School students, The New Hood develops community-based policy ideas, research, and solutions.

Our Goals: Elevate community voices in Black and Brown hoods on policy issues that impact them. Provide a platform for Black and Brown scholars. Develop Black and Brown policy professionals.
